New research has found that Spain is the destination where British tourists are most likely to fall ill while on holiday.
The study by Halifax Travel Insurance revealed that just under a quarter of holidaymakers had suffered from food poisoning when in the country, with Greece and Turkey following closely behind.
In addition, it was found that a third of people who felt their illness while on holiday had stopped other people from enjoying the break.
Discussing the findings, Halifax Travel Insurance spokesperson Vicky Watson said the study had revealed the important of taking out cover for time abroad.
She added: "Our research reveals that nearly one in five Brits had to visit a local hospital when on holiday as a result of food poisoning, which is not fun - so it's important to cover all your bases such as research and insurance before you embark on your trip."
Previous research by Halifax claimed that half a million people lose or have their passport stolen every year.
